The 5th Annual Archmarathon Awards 2018 was held from 11 to 13 October at the Palazzo Mezzanotte, where the Milan Stock Exchange is located. And the award ceremony took place at midnight from Saturday to Sunday (by the way, the palace is called “Midnight”).

“Architectural Oscar” gathered a record number of visitors at the Palazzo Mezzanotte. This year, 55 were selected from 600 teams participating in the event, from the 23 countries and 4 different continents that came to Italy to compete for awards. The winners in 16 nominations and two “Grand Prix” were presented with 19 unusual crystal figurines, and one participant received the special Stone Award from the organizers of the Marmomacc exhibition.

The Jury included architecture experts Luca Molinari (honorary president of the competition, Italy), Gary Chang (founder and managind director of the EDGE Design Institute, Hong Kong, China), Cherubino Gambardella (architect, professor at Seconda Università, Naples, Italy), Lesley Lokko (head of Graduate School of Architecture, Johannesburg, South Africa), Rozana Montiel (founder and managind director of ROZANA MONTIEL | ESTUDIO DE ARQUITECTURA, winner of the 2017 Grand Prix, Mexico City, Mexico) and Evgeniya Murinets (adviser to the President of the Union of Architects of Russia, member of the expert council of Urban development of Ministry of construction of Russia, member of Committee of architecture and urban planning of National Union of architects and contractors of Russia.).

The Grand Prix was awarded to representatives from the Netherlands and Spain, the MVRDV Bureau (the best architectural project of Seoullo 7017 Skygarden) and the Francisco Pardo Arquitecto + Amezcua (the best interior design project of Milan 44). The various architectural studios, such as Noero Architects, Piuarch, Vector Architects, Lissoni Architettura and others, became winners in various nominations. I would like to highlight one winning participant in the nomination “Sport” - the architectural bureau KOSMOS from Russia with offices in Moscow, Geneva, Graz and New York.

It is noteworthy that the project NIKE BOX MSK presented at the competition, which received such high marks, was fully implemented by the beginning of the FIFA World Cup 2018 on the territory of Gorky Park in Moscow. It was opened by the famous Brazilian football player Ronaldo. The appearance of the pavilion is unusual, it is not static, but multifunctional, with its appearance resembling installations of futurists. It is airy, transparent, each of its “petals” is responsible for its function.

A jury member, Evgeniya Murinets, called the implementation of such a multifunctional object very successful. We managed to talk with the studio architect, Leonid Slonimsky, who had come from Geneva to the awards ceremony.

- Leonid, the Russian bureau KOSMOS is a real discovery in the international professional arena. Young and talented architects, who are you?

- Our KOSMOS Architects bureau is represented by three partner architects. These are Artem Kitaev, Nikolay Martynov and me, Leonid Slonimsky. I live and teach at the University of Art and Design in Geneva.

- How do you work together, but live in different countries?

- We are united by our alma mater - all three, we are graduates of the Moscow Architectural Institute, but nevertheless we have another joint experience. Artem Kitaev and I worked for five years at the Swiss architectural bureau Herzog & de Meuron, which is a world leader, another partner from New York, Nikolay Martynov, built skyscrapers at the largest SOM bureau. In addition to friendship, we each have a “hook” - for example, Columbia University in New York, or the work of two of my partners in the Meganom bureau in Moscow.

- What can you tell us about the work at bureau as Herzog & de Meuron?

- We gained a lot of experience at Herzog & de Meuron. One of our major projects was the University project at Skolkovo, and the other was the Stamford Bridge stadium of the Chelsea football club; we have been working on this project for almost 4 years. When the project was suspended, we decided to open our bureau. We also taught in Bangkok at Queen’s University at that time.

- Now you have your own bureau, are there many international projects?

- Yes, there are a lot of Swiss projects. Of course, in Russia we have more projects, in Moscow, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. For example, in Italy we are currently working on a future Tuscan project. It will be equestrian center, where people can watch races on the screens. The center itself will be located in a very beautiful place.

- Do you have many projects related to the field of art and culture?

- Indeed, our first project was one of the temporary pavilions of the modern art center "Garage" in Moscow. There was also a project called “Art Cluster”, there people read poems and sang songs. We were nominated for Swiss art award, did projects for large exhibitions for the Victoria Foundation in Moscow, for MMoMA. We are currently working on a project for Swiss art council, which is held every four years, now we are choosing space for it in Prague.

- Congratulations on your victory, was it unexpected?

- We are very pleased with the award and are happy that our project was highly appreciated by an international jury.

- Thank you, Leonid, we wish good luck and new creative projects!
